What is a Flex Spending Account?
An FSA is an employer-sponsored, pre-tax benefit account used to pay for qualified out-of-pocket expenses.
Key facts:
Funded through payroll deductions before taxes.
Lowers taxable income.
Can be used for medical, dental, vision, and dependent care expenses.
Annual contribution limits are set by the IRS.
Most FSAs are “use it or lose it”—unused funds typically expire at year-end (some plans allow a small rollover or grace period).
The full annual amount is available at the start of the plan year (for healthcare FSAs).
Common types:
Healthcare FSA – copays, prescriptions, medical supplies.
Dependent Care FSA – childcare or elder care so you can work.
Outside of benefits, FSA can also mean other things (e.g., Financial Services Authority, Federal Student Aid), but in personal finance and employment contexts, it almost always refers to Flexible Spending Account.
